Regarding authorization.

Psychologists in Denmark can choose to be authorized in accordance with the act on the rights and duties of psychologists. Authorization is however not mandatory for the practice of psychology in Denmark.

In accordance with the act on the rights and duties of psychologists, the Danish Supervisory Board of Psychological Practice (Psykolognaevnet) is empowered to grant authorization to psychologists. Authorization can be granted to any person, who has graduated from a Danish university with a degree in psychology and who has thereafter completed a supplementary, practical education according to the regulations set down by the Supervisory Board.

The Supervisory Board can also grant authorization as a psychologist to persons, living in Denmark, who have received a degree comparable to the Danish degree in psychology from any university outside Denmark, and who have documented the completion of a supplementary, practical education equivalent to that set down by the Board.

For information regarding the recognition of education please see the section  :
                                Recognition of Education.

The supplementary, practical education.

Employment.
To apply for authorization an applicant must document the equivalent of at least 2 years of full-time employment as a psychologist. Part time work of at least 15 hours a week can be included. Periods of work less than 5 months in length cannot as a general rule be included in the 2 years. Teaching cannot be included in the period.

Documentation for employment should be signed by a superior at the psychologist’s place of work.

Supervision.
Application for authorization also requires documentation for supervision received in connection with the psychologist’s work.

Supervision received must amount to a total of at least 160 hours. Of the total number of hours, at least 40 hours of supervision must have been received individually, and at least 40 (converted) hours must be supervision received in groups in which psychologists have been in the majority.

In groups the total number of “real” hours is reduced (converted) according to group size.  Groups may not be any larger than 12 supervised.

Documentation for supervision received should be signed by the supervisor of the sessions, preferably a psychologist. Supervision received from psychiatrists is however allowed to a limited extent.

Diversification.
There must also be documentation for diversification in the applicant’s work as a psychologist. Diversification can for example be achieved by doing service at 2 different places of work, or by receiving supervision from supervisors with different backgrounds.
